Choosing a dual-band mobile antenna: SBB-1, SBB-2 or CR-77
Three dual-band antennas for 2 m and 70 cm, compared on length, gain and power handling.

All three antennas cover the 2 m and 70 cm amateur bands and fit a standard PL-259 mount. They differ in length, gain and how much power they handle.
Comet SBB-1 — the flexible all-rounder
- Bands: 146 / 446 MHz
- Gain: 1.5 dBi on 146 MHz (1/4 wave), 2.15 dBi on 446 MHz (1/2 wave)
- Length: about 40 cm · Max power: 60 W
- Connector: gold-plated PL-259
A flexible whip of moderate length — a sensible first antenna for everyday driving.
Comet SBB-2 — more gain on 70 cm
- Bands: 144 / 440 MHz
- Gain: 2.15 dBi on 2 m (1/4 wave), 3.8 dBi on 70 cm (5/8 wave)
- Length: about 46 cm · Max power: 60 W FM
Slightly longer than the SBB-1, with the highest 70 cm gain of the three.
Diamond CR-77 — compact and light
- Bands: 144 / 430 MHz · Gain: 2.15 dBi
- Length: 0.29 m · Weight: 90 g · Max power: 100 W
The shortest and lightest, and the one to choose if you run up to 100 W.
Which one?
Choose the CR-77 for low height or higher power, the SBB-2 for the best 70 cm performance, and the SBB-1 for a flexible, balanced whip. Whichever you pick, pair it with a mount and a coax cable set that match its PL-259 connector.
